Spectrum Management In Sri Lanka


National Scope


In Sri Lanka, Management of Radio Spectrum is handled by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. Telecommunication Act No. 25 of 1991 as amended by Act No. 27 of 1996 covers the laws applicable for the usage of radio specrtum in Sri Lnaka.


International Scope


International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is responsible for international cooperation and global harmonization of the usage of radio frequency spectrum.


Major Functions of Spectrum Management and Monitoring Section

  • Planning of Radio Frequency Spectrum in Sri Lanka according to ITU recommendations.
  • Examination of frequency assignment requirements and carrying out frequency assignments.
  • Issuance of annual invoices and licences for the usage of radio frequencies and radio equipment.
  • Evaluation, recommendation and authorization of radio equipment.
  • Detection, Identification and observation of all electromagnetic emissions in the radio frequency spectrum.
  • Mitigation of radio frequency interference.
